Depression Dinner

Maddie enjoys the online American Girl Club from Currclick.  They read 3 books over 3 months about each American Girl doll. They have been going in chronological order and finally got to Kit over the last few months. Kit's time is during the Depression. In the last meeting notes the teacher suggested a Depression era dinner. Maddie wanted to give it a try but the suggested dinner didn't sound like something we would like. So it was research time! We found videos called Cooking with Clara. It felt like my grandmothers, great grandmothers and aunts all came back for a bit to tell us about the Depression. We found Poorman's Dinner and baked apples which made our menu! We added in some homemade bread. It was good...as Brian said you could live on it! I think this is probably more on the table in a farm community where potatoes and apples would be easier to get during the Depression. Maddie helped me make everything, including the bread! We used the recipe from Artisian Bread in 5 Minutes a Day. Yum!!

Maddie & I were getting a bit silly in the kitchen! Our cooking seems to involve a lot of singing and dancing with the radio.

 Peeling potatoes under chef supervision!
We used the lovely big (large-HUGE) cast iron pan Poppa Bill gave me long ago.

These don't look like much but boy were they yummy!
