Felicity and Butterfly Cake

Today was an exciting day for Maddie. Her friend, Mackenzie, came for the day since there was no school. As usual they had a lot of fun! Then, right after lunch and everyone fell asleep I told Maddie to clear off the dining room table. She was puzzled and a tad bit annoyed(she was trying to play with Kenzie after all!) until I told her a box had arrived from UPS right before lunch. I never saw the table get so clean so fast. After a lot of saving, a lot of anticipation and a lot of drooling over the catalog, Felicity has come to live at our house.

Thank goodness the "toy packaging" on American Girl items is minimal!! We had to get to the best part you know!

Felicity came with "accessories" which included a mob cap, a "bit", a choker necklace, garters and a few other things. Those were important but not nearly as important as Felicity! It has been a lot of fun to watch Maddie with the new doll. This one is "alive" for her much more than the others she owns. She has been talking to her non-stop to explain things. For example, Felicity was amazed by Gabriel's Grocery Store, they didn't have stores like that in her time so Maddie was busy explaining the deli counter and fresh produce. They had quite the conversation which drew some amused looks by people around us who overheard parts of it. We are glad she is here and happy to watch Maddie have fun! Another funny but not so funny thing happened as well. Maddie said to me "Momma those people spelled my name wrong on Felicity!". I told her to go have another look because no one was supposed to put her name on Felicity. She went back and sounded out "Made in China" and shouted "Made in CHINA!! You are SUPPOSED to be an AMERICAN GIRL like me!". Its a sad truth, one of the things you think should be made here but isn't. An economics lesson to come...ready made!

Maddie tucked her girls into bed with books to read while waiting for her to do the bedtime routine. Notice that Felicity gets to read her own book while Samantha is reading about the Trojan War!I hope it doesn't give her nightmares...there is not enough room in our bed for all this crew plus Maddie!

Tonight we also had to do our cake baking for the spaghetti dinner at church tomorrow night. Brian will be there making spaghetti all day so Maddie and I get off rather lightly for now. I told her tonight that soon she will need to help with the dinner since she will benefit from it! The proceeds go to scholarships (grants?) to each child of the congregation that would like to attend Camp Fowler. I made a chocolate cake "for eating" and then I baked while Brian and Maddie decorated a butterfly cake for the auction. We always seem to have trouble frosting these things! We slap a lot of candy on the top in the hope that no one really notices and that it tastes so good they really don't notice!!

Stealing a Skittle!

Maddie's second revelation of the day: TWINKIES! We were talking about how to put the butterfly together at dinner and I said a twinkie was the body. Maddie looked at us and said "Whats a Twinkie?". Bri and I both grinned. I said this is the kid of a chef who has never been to school....that I think is one of the only ways for a 6 year to not have Twinkies figured out. So we let her have the second one in the package and the floodgates have opened!
