Experiments and Painting

Maddie is working on physics this year for science. We like to use Elemental Science. Most of the time our experiments are successful and sometimes they are not.  We've had a fun time with balance over the last 2 weeks or so and I thought I would share some of the pictures. Maddie has learned that the center of gravity is how we keep our balance.

Experiment #1 Tightrope Walkers!
We were supposed to use 1 liter soda bottles but when I got to the store I couldn't remember which size and ended up buying ones that were too small. So in looking around I came up with 2 wine bottles. Its a good thing we take forever to drink a bottle of wine!
Maddie was really please that they stayed on the "tightrope".

Experiment #2-Marty the Alien (Maddie's choice of name!)

Its hard to see but Marty is balancing on Maddie's finger with a toothpick.

Then Marty wanted to try the tightrope but that didn't work as well as Maddie's finger!
Doesn't he look sad?

We did some painting today with the day care kiddos too. Maddie likes to join in for the art projects. We've been talking about Spring (ha!) this week so we were painting "buds". Pussy Willows, forsythia, and apple buds. Maddie went all out on her forsythia and included some pussy willows on the side.

Why do I say "Spring (ha!)"? The last day of winter brought us this....

Maddie made the best of it and created a "snowbunny"! He is eating a carrot in his big front teeth and holding one for later.

Amazingly he still has ahold of both carrots despite rising temperatures and our crazy squirrels.

On Monday I was looking out at our "scary bush" at the top of the stairs from the street to the house and saw a hawk! Maddie was right there and jumped up to confirm that Momma was not losing her mind. She got to see him hop about a bit on the bush then fly away. We think it was a cooper's hawk probably looking for some fast food sparrow for breakfast. We were so excited!! It was a neat start to the day. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera at the ready...apparently I need to have it next to me, out of the bag at all times!
