Good-bye to the Flat Kids!

This weekend we spent a lot of time taking pictures of the flat kids from Hawaii! We had a lot of fun and Maddie learned quite a bit about her own little area. Here is what we wrote to the real kids!

The flat versions of you came all the way to our village of Scotia, NY.

These are some of the things they say and did while they were here:

visited the library for the summer reading program-splish splash dancing--we pretended to surf to Wipe Out! The library is the oldest house in Scotia, it was built in the 1700s.

visited Farmer Phil's farmstand for corn on the cob, tomatoes and cucumbers. We wait all winter and spring for a taste of Farmer Phil's corn. It has only been available for about 2 weeks and will be all gone by the first week of September.

My grandpa's bike shop to say hi to Poppa Bill!

Visited the Stockade in Schenectady, just over the bridge from our village, this was built long before the revolutionary war! We took a picture with Lawrence the Indian http://www.revolutionaryday.com/nyroute5/schenectady/default.htm

Lock 8 on the Mohawk River, a part of the NYS canal system

A section of the Erie Canal--in the picture you can see the bricks that built the walls of the canal

If Flat Elizabeth and Aaron came back to visit in the summertime they should wear shorts, t-shirts and flip flops. If they come in the winter they should wear sweaters, long pants, boots, coats, mittens, hats, scarves and anything else to keep warm! In the Fall and Spring the weather is constantly changing so they should bring layers of clothing.

Interesting facts about our village are:
Our village is located near Albany, the capital of NY

The area was settled mainly by the Dutch in the 1600 and 1700s but our village was started by a family from Scotland. Scotia means Scotland! Think about Nova Scotia in Canada when trying to pronounce our village's name.

We live next to the Mohawk River which was home to the Iroquois indians

We had a lot of fun doing this. Of course we will have to do this another 46 times!! I keep wondering if we will be as excited for number 46 as we were for number 1. I hope so! The best part of our day today was watching Maddie at the lock. That was her first trip to a lock....I am embarassed to say since its 5 minutes from us! We were so excited that they were all ready for a boat to come through. If you look closely at the second picture you can see it over her shoulder. More on Flat Kids later!!
