Maddie and I read the book
Flat Stanley this spring. When we finished the book there was a page at the end that said you could make your own Flat Stanley and send him off to explore. Maddie really wanted to do this but couldn't seem to make up her mind where to send a Flat Maddie once it was made. So I put it aside for later. Then one of my internet homeschool groups decided to do Flat Stanley together...yea! Not only do we get to make Flat Maddie and send her but she will be visiting other homeschool families before returning to us. Maddie took about 1/2 hour yesterday and produced Flat Maddie out of cardstock, colored pencils and fabric. Many of the fabric pieces were from things I have made for Maddie. It was a lot of fun to look at the scraps and remember what I made. Maddie surprised me by remembering almost all of them even though one was from when she was 2 1/2! So here is Flat Maddie from the front:

and with 3-D Maddie!!

We also included a short letter where we put Maddie's name, address, age, favorite color (girls need hot pink she told me to write!), favorite book (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Captain Underpants...I dare you to find another kid with that particular combination!) and what is cool about where we live. That last one took a bit of thinking but I helped her to recall that she can be in the woods with Poppa in just a short time or down in NYC with Daddy and Uncle Pete watching the Mets. Thats pretty much what we ended up writing down!!
Brian mailed her off today to Rome, NY and hopefully we will continue to have updates on where she went! I plan on getting a map going so we can mark where she went along with a binder of e-mails and pictures.
