Today we hung about the house. Brian and Maddie made a volcano after reading about Crete in her history book.
First they started with a pie plate (to help contain the overflow) and a plastic juice bottle in the middle. Then they covered it with model magic dough and let it dry for a while.
The end result after applying the dough.
The dough dries really fast which is good because Maddie really, REALLY wanted to paint!
Then we got to the fun part! They added water and baking soda to the bottle plus some yellow food coloring. Then Brian poured in vinegar and liquid soap (we assume this is to make things extra "bubbly") colored with red food coloring.
and.....WHAMO!!
Being a science kid she had to touch...
It was a lot of fun. Maddie knew what would happen as this is not the first baking soda and vinegar experiment we have done. We did one with a cup and rubber glove (the glove inflates) and last weekend Brian was helping her make plastic bags explode in the bathtub using the same ingreidents. They have plans to make a large volcano for outdoor use this summer. These are the experiments we have done from the book we gave Brian for Father's Day last year, The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science: 64 Daring Experiments for Young Scientists I'm sure that a lot more messy experiments are coming our way! What fun!!!
