Our Sunday

We had a busy afternoon today. I realized I haven't posted much of the mundane day to day homeschool schedule so thought I would do a bit of that today. We have been "doing school" on saturdays and sundays lately so we could some semi-quiet time without day care to do work. This has been going well. Brian likes it because he gets to do some of it with Maddie also. This morning Maddie and I worked on math, reading and spelling then took a break. During our break we went to the Schenectady Greenmarket to see Miss.Lisa. Miss.Lisa teaches preschool music classes and has come to the house to do a session with my kids. This was our first trip to the Greenmarket and it was a lot of fun. From there we headed to the Schenectady Library to pick up a few books. We were able to find The Chronicles of Narnia not only on DVD but also on a playaway. We finished the book last night and Maddie was anxious to watch the movie and listen to the story again. Mamaw Mary knit Maddie a special bag to hold the playaway. Here is what happened within minutes of getting home:

So I let her listen while I cleaned house! Then we got busy finishing the rest of our work. We started with History. We read about Greece this week so completed a map and coloring page of the Cyclops. While Maddie was coloring she listened to our chapter again on CD. This is a great way to reinforce what we have learned and she loves to listen. It was an investment but worth it!

Then we moved on to Science and the sense of sight. Our current major topic is the body and we are having fun reading all sorts of books from The Usborne First Encyclopedia of the Body to the Magic Schoolbus books. Maddie added some information to her science binder.

Then we finished with handwriting. This is a challenge all around because of Maddie's left handedness but we seem to be doing Ok. I am putting more emphasis on it lately and trying to do copywork as well as working in the workbook.

All this concentration was pretty good because the US/Canada gold medal hockey game was on while we were working. Fortunately we were doing our work at the beginning of the game so Brian was willing to mute the TV. However when the goals started coming along, everyone started cheering on USA!

So thats an afternoon in the life of the Westervelt family!!
