Books we are reading

We made a library trip tonight so I thought I would put in some of the books we have enjoyed over the summer and the ones we are working on now. My poor library card is smoking lately! Between homeschool and the day care I have 30-50 items out at a time. Somehow we manage to keep track of everything!!

Our favorite book this summer was Tum Tum and Nutmeg by Emily Bearn. This is actually 3 books in one very large book which impressed Maddie by its size. It took most of the summer for us to read but it was worth it. Our favorite character was General Marchmouse who has quite a bit in common with Toad of Toad Hall in The Wind in the Willows. The book was full of everything Maddie enjoys at the moment, ballerinas (a ballerina army to be exact!), pirates, spying and animals. A current favorite picture book is Goodnight Goon by Michael Rex. This is based on Goodnight Moon but its a child monster in a tomb. We have also been reading many books about Ancient Egypt including our Usborne Book, Who Built the Pyramids?. Maddie also discovered Judy Moody this summer and we have read or listened to many of those stories. Maddie likes books on cd and quickly learned that Momma will say yes to one of those even when she has said No to TV. We have listened to a lot of The Magic Treehouse on cd as well as Junie B. Jones, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Matlida. On Maddie's birthday we visited the Disney Christmas Carol Train. We were able to see a 3D preview to the movie which looks really well done. All that prompted Maddie to want to know the story so she can know when the scary parts are coming! Smart girl. Tonight at the library we found it on cd and started listening the minute we got home. Her favorite part so far is when Scrooge tells Marley "I'd rather not" after being told he will be haunted by 3 ghosts.

So that is what we are up to in books! I was worried we weren't reading enough each day to keep up with the schedule set out in The Well Trained Mind but went over it all again tonight and realized that we are more than keeping up! Phew!! Maddie is also starting to read better on her own and is more willing to give it a try. I am not sure exactly what prompted this change but will take it whatever the reason!!
