Ancient Egypt

We are starting to really get in depth with Ancient Egypt. Maddie really seems to enjoy the subject which makes it a lot of fun. We are currently trying to mummify an apple. This project was in a book from the library. The one in our regular activity book wanted us to mummify a chicken....a roasting chicken from the grocery store. This, quite frankly, grossed mom out so that idea went right out the window. It seemed very close to frog dissection to me on the disgusting scale. Apples I can handle...especially in October when they can be left in the cold of the back porch and bugs will not (I hope) come to join the fun. One apple is not in the baking soda/salt mixture and the other is. We also got a little scientific about it and weighed the apples before we began. We check them daily but will not uncover the apples and see whats really happening for 2 weeks. They are getting poked and prodded not only by Maddie but by every day care child that walks by!! Hopefully they make it.
When we do history, science or read a book we make a page for Maddie's binders. She has one for each subject. Maddie dictates back to me what she thinks is important, I write this down then Maddie makes a picture to go with it. One of the latest ones for history was about mummies. Maddie gave me the relevant facts then did her picture. The priest making the mummy has his tongue stuck out in concentration. I had trouble getting this in the picture above but you might be able to make it out. I loved it! It is what Maddie does while concentrating so she assumed they would too.
Sunday we are having an Egyptian dinner...hopefully! More on that later.
