World War II Dinner!

We have been reading about the lead up to and beginning of World War II. We also read about the Holocaust. This has been a bit rough for Maddie...lets face it, its been rough for Momma and Daddy too! Its hard enough as an adult to wrap your mind about such a thing happening and then to have to explain to your child, especially a child as giving and caring as Maddie is (I know, I know, I am biased! I'm allowed, I'm her mom.), its just not easy. She has been doing a lot of yelling "NO! NO! NO!" while I've been reading about the lead up to World War II. So we've been trying to focus on the homefront and some of the good that happened during the war (there were a couple of things!). Next time around, when we are in 8th grade then we can get a bit more into the nitty gritty I think but, for now, its enough to understand that there were awful things happening all over and at the same time there were pockets of people helping.

One of the characters we have been reading about a lot is Molly from American Girl. She is one of the original dolls so there is a lot of books and information associated with her out there. We have a craft book, cookbook and Welcome to Molly's World from the library. Maddie requested a World War II dinner after reading the cookbook so tonight we got busy! The menu was meatloaf (Daddy's world famous meatloaf!), volcano potatoes and (originally) Victory salad. We didn't feel like cold salad tonight so opted for victory broccoli instead! Maddie loved making the volcano potatoes! What fun!!

The cookbook!

Maddie helped peel and mash the potatoes, grate the cheese and form the volcanoes. They came out a bit more mountainy than volcanoey but no one was complaining!

Mmmmm.....good!

We also have a books called Heroes of the Holocaust., Kids Activities for World War II and Number the Stars to read in the coming weeks. We need to finish The Hobbit first! Number the Stars is a fictionalized account of the country of Denmark banning together to get 7000 Jewish citizens to safety in Sweden.

Now we are off to practice The Isles of Innisfree by William Butler Yeats with Maddie's 4H buds. They will be doing this together for presentation day in March.
