We had so much fun today! We met up with the other homeschool families at the Empire State Plaza concourse for the Homeschool Science Fair. Maddie's experiment was "Will taco sauce clean a penny?" and the answer is "Yes it will!". Maddie set up her half of the table. There were 2 kids to a 6 foot table and 40 families were expected. We got busy and I forgot to check back to see exactly how many actually showed up! All the tables were full though and full of interesting and exciting projects. Since all ages were participating it made things very interesting. There were experiments like Maddie's that were basic but showing the scientific method to more complex experiments like working with robots to show how to program a computer and a homemade tornado!
Here is Maddie with her set up at the table.
Here is a shot down the hall a bit:
The hours of the fair were 11-1. The first hour was very quiet but once 12:00 came things got busy! Maddie did an excellent job of explaining her project to anyone who showed the least interest in what she had done. This was not only a good experience in science but also in public speaking! She had no issues talking to whomever stopped, young, old, male, female or even the research scientist who asked some pretty tough questions!
No matter how much fun you are having 2 hours is a long time for a 7 year old! Especially when you are sitting and staring at McDonalds but eating a ham sandwich instead (don't worry, we took her out for dinner tonight...we didn't deprive her totally). So after a while Daddy's lap looked like a good spot!
Then it was time for some coloring. Since this was a homeschool event there were tables set up down the middle for all the younger siblings. However the only ones I saw take advantage of the coloring books and crayons was Maddie and the other little boy in this picture who was 6.
All in all it was a great day! And we have to add a special thanks to the Parent-Teacher Store in Latham who gave a $5 gift certificate to every child who participated! I debated for a minute about keeping that to myself but I was good and let Maddie have it. Here we are in our homeschool uniforms! The Principal Dad, Proud Homeschool Mom and 100% Homeschooled Chick.
Can't wait to do it again next year!!!
