Worm Farms and Nature Hikes

Maddie had to make a small "worm farm" for her invertebrate unit in Biology. The day before we started it was very warm out but, naturally, the day we actually were working on it was dreary and cold. Fortunately we located worms just the same! The idea was to put 2 different types of soil into the clear soda bottle so she could see the worms mix the dirt together. It worked really well and the day care kiddos had fun getting in on the action.

 

Last weekend we took a trip to 5 Rivers to meet up with our 4H buddies. We met with Mike, a naturalist, who took us around a bit and helped the kids find animal signs. Scat, trails, and chewed beaver sticks were some of the popular ones! Especially the muddy beaver train across the road to get from one pond to another!

 

 Maddie's favorite part in the education building was talking to Athena. Athena is a barred owl who lost an eye in a collision with a car and couldn't be released back into the wild.
