Week in Review!

We were up to lots of things last week! Science experiments, birdhouse plans, yarn dying and planting new plants.

Maddie was so excited to try this experiment we saw on Steve Spangler's website. We put warm water over gobstoppers and the color dissolved into the water but didn't mix together. The candy has a thin layer of wax on it which keeps them separate. Next we want to try really hot water and see if that makes a difference!

 Isn't it pretty?

On Saturday Maddie helped Brian set up stations so we can make kits for the 4H kids to make bluebird boxes at our meeting this week. Since no one is old enough to use power tools yet (according to 4H rules!) 4 parents made up the kits with the help of some of the older kids. While working on that Brian and Maddie found a wooly bear caterpillar! He is now in our bug jar on the table. Maddie is hoping he will make a cocoon and turn into a moth for us. She is feeding him fresh grass daily and put some sticks and twigs in the jar.

Then our helpers arrived and we got busy. The kids helped measure and count out nails.

We picked up some new ground cover from the county farm on Saturday but didn't have time to plant it with all the bluebird box goings on. So we worked on that Sunday morning. These look like they will be really pretty. I hope they thrive and help us out in that shady corner of the yard!

We also planted the garden and got the yard cleaned up a bit! I'll have more about the yarn dying later in the week. We had a lot of fun with the other 4H kids. Now we will be moving on to learning to knit!
