Owl Box Finishing!

The Altamont Fair opens next week which means its time to get stuff done around our house! This weekend Brian and Maddie worked to complete the owl box. It was a lot of fun to watch them work together. Brian said Maddie did probably 70% of the work. She insisted on doing things herself when she could. 4H rules prevent her from using power tools however Brian decided this wouldn't/shouldn't include a cordless screwdriver. Its Maddie's new favorite thing!

They were supposed to use a router make the slots for the owl's toes to land on but we didn't have one. Poppa Bill had one but he was working when they were ready to go and Maddie couldn't use the router any way. Instead they used a hammer and chisel.
Making measurements!

Great job except the first set was sideways! Take 2 with the chisel.

A little touch up painting....

 And its done!

The top flips open so you can check on the baby owls (if only we are so lucky!)

Now Maddie is going to enter this in the fair. Once thats over we are going to hang it up in the backyard. We won't get an owl yet but they may spy it and like it on their trip south this fall. Then,  hopefully, they will come back in the spring!
