Maddie and I had trouble getting down to business this week but once we did we made great progress! I am so proud of her accomplishments lately. She is reading like a champ and sounding out words wherever we go. She is not too thrilled with our reading instruction book, The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, but we use it any way because it works! Its a lot of drill and practice with no pictures to guide her in making a guess at the word. I like that because then she needs to sound it out. We have also been working on addition and subtraction in math which she really likes. Currently we are using the Singapore Math 2 year Kindergarten curriculum. We are on the last book and have finished all 4 this year. They have changed the program and it has become more expensive so we have switched to Saxon Math for next year. Hopefully we manage to not blow through 4 books in one year with that curriculum!
We finally reached the weekend which is why we kept having trouble concentrating this week! On Sunday we made a trip to the Great Escape. We found a great deal on tickets and will be going back later in the summer since Maddie earned a ticket through reading this winter. We were there from the time the park opened and almost until it closed. She is a thrill seeker and loves to go on the roller coasters with Daddy. They went on the Desperado Plunge, a water roller coaster, twice then right to the family roller coaster for another 2 rides. Phew! That is not my thing at all but they loved it. She also went on many of the tamer rides. The old gondola was another favorite and she went once with me and once with Brian. We were disappointed because Cinderella's horses were not out yet so there was no ride in the coach but will be able to do that later in the summer. Cinderella was there making a fuss over all the little girls so that was good at least. We met the sherriff in Ghost Town. Brian and Maddie were put in jail! That was a lot of fun. When we saw the sherriff again later he remembered Maddie and gave her a high 5. Maddie is still terrified by anyone dressed up in any outfit where you cannot see the person's face. We are doing our best to tell her not to panic, just put her hand up and say no thank you. She did do that once but on the whole she panics even when the character is a mile away and not looking at her. Right after talking to Cinderella a bunch of Looney Tunes guys were coming toward us, she announced she had to go potty and dashed into the bathroom so fast that by the time I got there she was in a stall with door shut and asking me if they were coming in. I am still trying to figure out how we will ever make it through Disney if she doesn't get over this or at least learn how to handle it in the next few years. Despite the dressed up people we had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back!!
