Science Week!!

We have had a lot of fun this week with science. Especially today!

We have started a new experiment book for Chemistry called Adventures with Atoms and Molecules. On Tuesday we learned that temperature can affect the way molecules move. Maddie filled 2 cups with water, one hot tap water and the other cold. Then she put 1 drop of food coloring in each cup. The hot water cup turned all blue much faster than the cold cup. It was also more uniform in color after a while.

Today we had an afternoon and evening filled with science! We read about crystals in one of Maddie's favorite books, The Usborne Science Encyclopedia Then I told her that we have crystals at home. I got out sugar, salt and kosher salt and we looked at it with her pocket microscope. Maddie was amazed and looked at each one individually then mixed them up together to see if she could tell them apart!

Then we moved on to history pockets about the American Revolution. The pocket we are working on is about spies and traitors! So we did a science experiment about invisible ink! We mixed baking soda and water then Maddie wrote a word on paper. After it dried we went over it with grape juice which brought out the word FREE! Maddie said it was a message from headquarters that we were finally free!

I had to take a picture with the remnants of our science week! The sugar and salt are on the paper with the pocket microscope on the table, the invisible ink is hanging from the lamp to dry and beans are hanging in the window waiting to sprout! Once those beans sprout we will be measuring the growth on a graph for math.

Tonight we had a 4H meeting and did an experiment with 5 different stations to learn how different birds beaks work to help them collect food. Science all around!
