Maddie's Popinas

This week we started reading about Ancient Rome. We read about Romulus and Remus then about their form of government. We also got out Maddie's book See Inside Ancient Rome which is a lot of fun. We learned about fasces and I mean it when I say "we"! I have seen this symbol all my life but never knew what it was! We also read about Roman Popinas. The poor of Ancient Rome couldn't afford to have their own kitchens so they ate at take out restaurants. We did some reading up on food from that time and decided to have fun with our own Popinas!

We decided to have apples, grapes, cucumbers, lentil soup and feta "pizza" with yogurt for dessert. The Romans did not have tomatoes so the pizza is the crust brushed with olive oil, spices and garlic then feta cheese, onions and olives on the top. Maddie opted for cheese only. She likes a lot of things but onions and olives are not on the list!

This was not only "take out" at our restaurant but also "do it yourself" since chef Maddie cannot yet use sharp knives or operate the oven! She can peel a cucumber though under the watchful eye of the head chef!

Here are the pizzas and our table before we dug in!!

And the end result??
