What to do with the candy?

Maddie had a great time trick or treating this year! She dressed as Wonder Woman which she picked. We had to order the costume since the only ones we could find locally were pink! Maddie was very determined that Wonder Woman is NOT pink! So we found Wonder Woman not only red, white and blue but also with the golden lasso, boot covers, headband, belt and wrist bullet deflectors. Thrilled can be the only word to describe Maddie.

Brian helped her carve a pumpkin and we were all set!

We spent about 2 hours trick or treating. We buzzed out to catch the cider and doughnut firetruck and I forgot my camera! We stopped at lots of houses and met up with Maddie's friend Grace who was dressed as Cinderella. She joined Maddie in the trick or treating and they had a great time.

Today our math lesson was to cut a 2 inch piece of an article from the newspaper then tally up the number of times certain letters appeared on the paper. I thought that sounded really rather boring and we had a whole pumpkin full of Halloween candy sitting there. I gave Maddie the choice of things to tally. I'll give you one guess which activity she picked!

What a lot of loot she had to count! She loved it and did a great job of organizing, sorting and counting. I don't remember being taught in school how to make tally marks! I remember Momm showing me how to make tally marks when she was knitting! I said to Maddie, you've seen me do this, right? She promptly answered "Yup, when you knit! I always wondered what you were doing.". Apples don't fall far from the tree!

School has been going really well. Maddie is working hard and learning a lot. We are working on some extra things this month. A Thanksgiving unit study and another unit study on Native Americans. She is thrilled to be learning cursive writing and is still practicing printing.
